PRE-INDUCTION RESOURCES

At GEMS Education, we believe that profesional learning and development (PLD) opportunities are essential for all teachers and leaders, no matter their experience. Throughout your time in our schools, you will be given the opportunity to engage in PLD to improve your knowledge, understanding and skills linked to teaching and learning.

Prior to a colleague joining our schools, we ask them to engage in some pre-induction PLD by participating in 8 training sessions, that have been developed by teachers and leaders across our cluster. Each session lasts between 20mins-45mins to complete, with time for you to reflect on what you have learnt.

 The sessions are as follows:

  1. Living in the UAE (30 minutes)

  2. The British Curriculum (30 minutes)

  3. An Introduction to Safeguarding (20 minutes)

  4. Behaviour for Learning (30-45 minutes)

  5. Effective Differentiation (30-45 minutes)

  6. Checking for Understanding (AfL) (30-45 minutes)

  7. Effective Questioning (30 minutes)

  8. Quality and Effective Feedback (30-45 minutes)

SESSION SIX:
CHECKING FOR UNDERSTANDING (AfL)

In this session, participants will learn about how we can smartly check what students have learned, before using that information to help us plan for what they need to learn next. The session will explore some common and effective ‘Assessment for Learning’ techniques and how to use them.

SESSION ONE: LIVING IN THE UAE

In this session, participants will have the opportunity to discover more about the opportunities of living in the UAE, as well as raising awareness of some of the issues to be aware of. The session will also feature some common Arabic phrases, as well as answering some FAQs about living in the UAE.

SESSION TWO: THE BRITISH CURRICULUM

In this session, participants will have the opportunity to learn more about the structure of the British Curriculum. This session will explore the fundamental principles of the NCfE, such as the values, aims and purpose. They will also learn about how students’ progress through the different Key Stages.

SESSION THREE : AN INTRODUCTION TO SAFEGUARDING

In this session, participants will be introduced to the fundamental principles of safeguarding. This session will touch on the importance of our duty of care to students, including how to spot signs of abuse. They will also have the opportunity to reflect on how the importance of safer working practices.

SESSION FOUR: BEHAVIOUR FOR LEARNING

In this session, participants will learn some of the ways they can engage and motivate our students in lessons, so that they are willing learners.

SESSION FIVE: EFFECTIVE DIFFERENTIATION

In this session, participants will learn about the principles of effective differentiation and ‘Quality First Teaching’. They will be provided with practical tips that can be adopted in all lessons to provide effective challenge and support for all students with minimal teacher input.

SESSION SEVEN: EFFECTIVE QUESTIONING

In this session, participants will learn about the most common teaching method in the world; questioning. By exploring the most effective ways of asking questions – ones that oblige the whole class to think – the participants will improve be introduced to this fundamental aspect of great teaching.

SESSION EIGHT: QUALITY AND EFFECTIVE FEEDBACK

In this session, participants will learn about the importance of giving effective feedback. This session will explore the fundamental principle of that feedback should ‘move learning forward’.
